Explorer
The signature deep cardinal red. Grown in our own production at 3,200 meters altitude in Cayambe, Ecuador.
A garnet-dark red with more shadow in it than Freedom — the red you choose when the brief says "moody" instead of "valentine." Explorer opens slower and bigger than most reds in its class, which is exactly why event designers schedule around it.
The grow story
Grown at 3,200 meters above sea level in our own production fields in Cayambe, Ecuador. At that altitude the equatorial sun is intense but the nights drop sharply, and the plant responds by building thicker petals and packing in pigment — Explorer's signature depth of color is a high-altitude trait, not a dye job. Lower-altitude reds from 1,800–2,400m greenhouses read flatter and age faster. Each harvest is cut, hydrated, graded, and cold-packed within 48 hours of leaving the block.

Best for
Editorial and fashion work, fall and winter weddings, dramatic centerpiece designs where the red needs weight rather than brightness. The oversized open head makes Explorer efficient too — designers report covering the same visual area with fewer stems than smaller-headed reds. Go 70 cm for tall pedestal pieces; 60 cm carries most centerpiece and bouquet work. Compare companion reds in our wholesale rose range.
Pairs beautifully with
- Mondial (white) for high-contrast classic palettes
- Quicksand (sand) for the moody, antique look stylists keep requesting
- Hearts (garden rose, red) for layered monochrome texture
- Hydrangea White for volume against the dark red
- Eucalyptus Silver Dollar for cool gray-green contrast
Care notes
Re-cut stems at a 45° angle under running water and hydrate in 95–100°F water with preservative. Store at 34–38°F. Explorer's large head wants support while it opens — keep bunches sleeved until the first re-cut, then give stems room. Moderately ethylene-sensitive; keep clear of ripening fruit in shared coolers.
What working pros say
"Explorer is my dark-red workhorse for fall books. It opens enormous — I plan three fewer stems per arrangement than I would with a standard red and the piece still reads full. Clients always ask what it is."
— Event floral designer, Northeast region (12 yrs experience)
"The garnet tone is what sells it. Burgundy palettes usually need dahlias to get this deep — Explorer gets there with a rose's vase life."
— Studio florist, Southern California (8 yrs experience)
