Bells of Ireland

The line flower the green palettes have been waiting for. Bells of Ireland — botanically Moluccella laevis — sends up square stems lined with stacked papery green bells that are actually the flower's calyces (the cup-shaped sepals), not the petals. Tiny fragrant white florets hide inside each bell, but the bracts are the product: a column of sculptural green that climbs tall and reads as both line and texture in a single stem. Where snapdragons go pink-cream-yellow and delphinium goes blue, Bells of Ireland is the architectural green spike no other flower replaces.

The grow story

Sourced from our curated network of partner growers in the Ecuadorian and Colombian highlands, conditioned to cold-chain standards equivalent to Magnaflor's own rose production at Cayambe. Bells of Ireland is a cool-weather annual that flowers hardest when nights stay below 60°F — exactly the year-round profile of our partner farms in the highlands. Stems are cut when roughly half the bells along the spike have reached full pale-green saturation, with the bottom florets just opening to release the soft fragrance.

Care notes

Handle with care — Bells of Ireland has small thorns hidden among the bells; gloves help during processing. Re-cut at 45° and hydrate immediately; the hollow square stems drink fast. Strip any leaves below the water line (the foliage is sparse but what's there decays quickly). Strongly geotropic like snapdragons — store and transport upright or the tips will bend skyward and set permanently. Moderately ethylene-sensitive. Hold at 34–38°F.
