Delphinium's lighter-handed cousin. Larkspur carries its florets looser along the spike — smaller blooms, more space between them, finer ferny foliage — which gives designers vertical line with air instead of mass. Where delphinium architecture reads formal, larkspur reads meadow: it is the spike that makes garden-style arrangements look gathered rather than built. The purple form runs violet with silver undertones, deepest at the newly opened florets near the tip.

The grow story

Grown by our partner specialty growers in the Ecuadorian and Colombian highlands, working under cold-chain standards equivalent to Magnaflor's own production at Cayambe. Larkspur is a cool-season annual that bolts and weakens in heat — the perpetual spring of the highland climate lets partner farms cut strong, straight spikes every week of the year instead of one short season. Growers are vetted for color stability and stem consistency that match our quality bar.

Best for

Garden-style centerpieces and hand-tied bouquets that want height without weight, meadow-look installations, bud-vase runs where one spike carries the vessel, and drying programs — larkspur air-dries holding strong color for everlasting work. It is the line flower for designs that should look effortless. Anchor the rounded forms beneath it from our wholesale rose range.

Pairs beautifully with

  • Country Blues (purple garden rose) for the gathered-garden recipe
  • Ocean Song (dusty lavender) in the soft middle layer
  • Delphinium when the design needs both formal and loose spikes
  • Scabiosa for pincushion texture at meadow scale
  • Baby's Breath to fill the airspace between spikes

Care notes

Like all members of the delphinium family, larkspur is highly ethylene-sensitive — florets drop near fruit, ripening produce, and aging flowers, so cooler discipline decides its vase life. Re-cut at 45° and hydrate immediately with preservative. Store and transport upright: tips are strongly geotropic and a spike laid flat overnight will set a permanent upward curve. Hold at 34–38°F.

What working pros say

"Larkspur is how I fake a cutting garden. Roses and hydrangea give me the body, but the loose spikes are what make people say it looks just-picked."

— Wedding floral designer, Burlington (9 yrs experience)

"Store it standing or regret it. Every horizontal hour shows up as a bend you can't design around."

— Event florist, Salt Lake City (13 yrs experience)
