Leather Fern
The signature garden green. Grown by curated partner growers across the Ecuadorian and Colombian highlands.
The industry workhorse of cut greenery. Leather Fern — botanically Rumohra adiantiformis — sends up triangular fronds of dark, glossy, leathery green that branch symmetrically from a single central stem, broad at the base and tapering to a fine point at the tip. It's the most-ordered cut foliage in American floristry for one reason: durability. Fronds shrug off handling that would bruise softer greens, hold out of water for hours during installation, and stay presentable for two to three weeks once arranged. The fern that earns its name.
The grow story
Sourced from our curated network of partner growers in the Ecuadorian and Colombian highlands, conditioned to cold-chain standards equivalent to Magnaflor's own rose production at Cayambe. Leather Fern grows under partial-shade tropical conditions and is harvested year-round, with peak frond size and gloss in stems cut from mature plants. Fronds are graded by size and uniformity before packing — designers ordering by the case can expect consistent shape from stem to stem.

Best for
Bouquet greening (collar foliage around rose focals), cascading bridal bouquets where the trailing edge needs structure, casket sprays and sympathy arrangements in the traditional southern style, retail bunches across categories, and any design where the green needs to do work without drawing attention to itself. Leather Fern is also the install-day green — it can sit dry on a worktable for hours and still go into the arrangement looking fresh. Build the focal layer from our wholesale rose range.
Pairs beautifully with
- Freedom (signature red) for the classic dozen-rose recipe
- Vendela (ivory) for the standard bridal build
- White Hydrangea where the dark green frames white volume
- Israeli Ruscus for layered foliage at different leaf sizes
- Baby's Breath for the classic frame-and-fill greenery combination
Care notes
The most forgiving foliage in the catalog. Re-cut at 45° and hold in clean water; preservative optional. Negligible ethylene sensitivity, full cooler tolerance at 34–38°F, and the leathery surface resists fingerprint marks better than glossier greens. Out of water it holds presentable for many hours, which is why installation crews favor it for outdoor work. For premium presentation, wipe fronds with a damp cloth before high-end builds — the gloss reads as quality.
