Sunflower
The signature saturated yellow. Grown by curated partner growers across the Ecuadorian and Colombian highlands.
The most recognized flower on earth, graded for design work. Field sunflowers come wild — heads too big, stems too curved, faces pointing everywhere. These are cut-flower sunflowers: single-stem, pollen-free hybrid types bred to a uniform head size that actually fits in an arrangement, with straight stems and the deep golden petals around a dark chocolate center that clients are picturing when they say the word. The pollen-free breeding matters at the table — no yellow dust on the linens.
The grow story
Grown by our partner specialty growers in the Ecuadorian and Colombian highlands, working under cold-chain standards equivalent to Magnaflor's own production at Cayambe. Sunflowers track the equatorial light fast — partner farms run them as a quick-turn crop, seeding weekly so cutting stays continuous, and harvest just as the petals lift off the face for maximum vase life. Growers are vetted for head uniformity and stem strength that match our quality bar.

Best for
Rustic and barn wedding programs, late-summer and autumn event work, farmers-market-style retail bunches, sympathy designs with a warm voice, and corporate work that wants instant optimism. One sunflower sets the mood of an entire arrangement — few flowers carry that much narrative per stem. Mix them against focals from our wholesale rose range.
Pairs beautifully with
- Candlelight (soft yellow rose) to layer the yellow register
- Mandarin Xpression (intense orange) for the harvest palette
- Royal Chrysanthemum for a second golden head with longer legs
- Solidago for golden spray texture between heads
- Green Ball for round green contrast beside the dark centers
Care notes
Sunflowers are the heaviest drinkers in the cooler — a bucket that lasted other flowers three days is dry in one. Check water daily, re-cut at 45°, and use preservative; the thick stems foul water quickly, so change it every two days. Heads are heavy: store stems upright with support so necks don't kink. Low ethylene sensitivity. Hold at 34–38°F. Faces fixed at cutting — orient them deliberately when designing.
What working pros say
"Sunflowers sell the idea of a season. I put three in a market bunch and the whole stand moves faster — they're merchandising, not just product."
— Retail florist, Des Moines (12 yrs experience)
"Top up the buckets every single day. A sunflower with a drink is a week of flower; a thirsty one folds at the neck overnight."
— Event florist, Oklahoma City (9 yrs experience)
